Acting on intelligence that a cloned car - a red five-door Peugeot 207 - was active in York during the early hours of today (Friday 3 July 2026), our Roads Policing, Operational Support, and Response teams went on the hunt. This followed a report at 12.15am of an attempted theft of a van on The Wandle when the suspects fled after the alarm went off.
Further information came in that the red Peugeot had been seen driving in convoy with a white Fiat motorhome. At 2.07am, officers spotted the motorhome heading away from York on the A64.
It then travelled south on the A1(M). A pursuit was authorised when it was confirmed that the vehicle had just been stolen from an address in New Earswick.
The driver failed to stop for the police and the pursuit continued into West Yorkshire. Assisted by West Yorkshire Police, a stinger device was used to deflate the tyres of the motorhome as it travelled south towards Darrington.
The vehicle was stopped at 2.27am and the driver was arrested at the scene. Meanwhile, back in York, officers located the cloned car in the Osbaldwick area and a further three arrests were made.
The men, aged 35, 31, 30 and 20, remain in custody for questioning in relation to multiple offences including theft of a motor vehicle. Witnesses or anyone with relevant CCTV, doorbell or dashcam footage, are urged to contact North Yorkshire Police on 101.
