WATCH: Banned motorist jailed after driving straight into launch of Operation Fearless

This is the moment a banned motorist fled from police after he’d inadvertently driven into the launch of Operation Fearless in Handsworth. Mohammad Khan was spotted in a Mercedes A Class speeding down the Soho Road by our Roads Policing Unit officers who were among dozens of officers working in the area to mark the official arrival of Fearless on the Soho Road and Handsworth Triangle on 13 May.

Officers pursued Khan, but he failed to stop and reached speeds of up to 60mph in 30mph areas, travelling on the wrong side of the road and forcing oncoming vehicles to brake. He clipped a member of the public’s car, before finally speeding into Beauchamp Avenue, where he clipped a kerb and hit a garden wall and tree.

Khan, of Rookery Road, Handsworth, attempted to flee but was confronted by officers and arrested. At Birmingham Crown Court last Friday (12 Jun), the 28-year-old was jailed for 14 months after admitting dangerous driving, uninsured driving, and driving while disqualified.

Det Insp Tom Lyons, from Operation Fearless, said: “Khan picked a really bad day to be speeding on the Soho Road. We had dozens of officers and partners out in the area to get the message out that Fearless had arrived to make the area safer for everyone who lives, works and visits there.

“Great work by traffic officers who were there to support us meant that a banned and uninsured motorist who was willing to put himself, others, and our officers at risk with his dangerous driving is now behind bars.” Operation Fearless officers have made dozens of arrests since arriving on the Soho Road and Handsworth Triangle last month. They’ve been working closely with partners including the Business Improvement District, and Trading Standards, to listen to the community’s concerns, crack down on crime and improve the area for everyone who lives, works and visits there.
